CDI seeks consultants
with one (or ideally both) of two orientations: management consulting
and technical consulting. Management consultants will make the business
case for DOI adoption to publishers and other content producers who are
evaluating the DOI, and will secure buy-in to the DOI both at the individual
customer level and (wherever opportunities allow) at the industry level.
Technical consultants will specialize in implementing the DOI for customers,
and will be grounded both in the technology used throughout the content
life-cycle (authoring/composition/editorial systems, content management,
digital asset management, content conversion, metadata, licensing/royalty,
digital rights management, e-commerce, and back-office systems), and in
the technology used in the DOI process (Internet-based transaction systems,
XML, bibliographic/metadata databases, content hosting, access control,
etc.).
Both types of consultants must be capable of project-managing a customer
engagement, orat the industry levelorganizing and driving
industry consensus around standards, processes, and possibly sector-level
applications or services.
Though we employ a common underlying approach, methodology, and suite
of services, CDI consults across many types of content industries (Publishing,
Music, Film/Video, Photography, etc.). We therefore seek consultants who
are already experts in these various industries. Although there will be
ample opportunity to cross over to other sectors, candidates should already
possess a strong "insider" knowledge of at least one industry, how it
operates, who its players are, and what it will take to transform the
way it does business as it migrates to the online world. Particularly
among candidates for management consultant, a clear track record of leadership
within an industry sector, including evidence of commitment to issues
which transcend the interests of individual companies, and an ability
to organize effectively for concrete results, is paramount.

CDI seeks a wide
variety of technologists grouped into three general areas: Product/Service
Development, Operations, and Internal IT.
Product/Service Development involves creating the services and
applications which will make the DOI usable in a business setting and
will deliver value to content producers and to the entire digital distribution
chain. We are looking for a number of individuals with knowledge across
the following skillsets and platforms: UNIX, NT, Oracle (incl. data modeling/architecture
as well as database design/implementation), Java, Perl, HTML, C/C++, Lotus
Notes/Domino, misc. "Internet infrastructure" technologies (DNS, caching,
PKI, etc.), and misc. technology supporting content creation, processing,
distribution and sale over the Internet.
Operations ensures
that all services will run 24x7 and will scale significantly over time.
(We expect that within a 5-10 year timeframe, the number of DOIs on the
Internet will reach well into the hundreds of millions.) Skills/platforms
required: Same as above, plus tools for database tuning, network monitoring,
and overall performance of large-scale Internet-based services.
Internal
IT not only
manages our internal corporate infrastructure, but delivers internal applications
which will strengthen our corporate culture and improve our performance
for customers by facilitating information-sharing, knowledge management,
customer service, and relationship management with all external customers
and partners. Platforms/skills required: UNIX/NT (server level), PC/Mac
(desktop), Lotus Notes/Domino (both for corporate email/calendaring and
for all internal information-sharing applications), and a full suite of
desktop applications, productivity tools, project-management tools, and
desktop publishing tools.

CDI espouses a core
marketing message and a core set of values in servicing our customers
and our partners, but the particulars vary from content industry to content
industry, and from technology partner to technology partner. Marketing
and Sales staff are responsible for articulating that message and applying
it appropriately within all these areas. It also provides market analysis
to support our business strategies, including prioritization of resources
and activities across these various customer and partner segments. Lastly,
although the Consulting division is in one sense also the Sales division,
and is the most direct communication channel to customers, Marketing and
Sales staff closely support the Consulting division's efforts, taking
on tasks with applications across sectors, and providing the support needed
to ensure consistency across our sector-specific activities.
